Overview: Few subjects in soteriology are as hot at the issue of the Atonement. What is the atonement? How should we view it? The traditional Evangelical view of the atonement is called the vicarious substitutionary theory. As of late, it has come under attack. We will look at the history of the atonement helping people to wade through the waters of the various theories that have been proposed throughout church history.
