1. Isn’t there anything else the courts could be doing?

I mean, does a cross for the burial site of a police man really offend you that much?

2. Ben Witherington makes a call to Christians about the faith of Obama.

I agree. It is one thing to call into question the way he defines “Christian” and quite another to make this an issue.

3. Speaking of the way he defines “Christian”, I found this interesting.

This stood out:

FALSANI:
Do you believe in heaven?

OBAMA:
What I believe in is that if I live my life as well as I can, that I will be rewarded. I don’t presume to have knowledge of what happens after I die. But I feel very strongly that whether the reward is in the here and now or in the hereafter, the aligning myself to my faith and my values is a good thing.

4. I will be in Columbus GA doing a “Bible Boot Camp on Biblical Interpretation” next weekend.

I would love to see you there.

5. There is a series going on at “Pillar on the Rock” about Pastors and Practice.

I particularly appreciated this from “What is a Pastor?”

“What’s wrong with calling someone pastor even if you don’t actually know that person?

The issue fundamentally boils down to the meaning of words. The Greek word poimena, in some English versions of the Bible, is translated as “pastor.” The term “pastor,” at one time, maintained the proper meaning of poimena, but now the term is used generally in reference to ministers or clergy. This is unfortunate , because “pastor” no longer points back to its original meaning. For our modern ears, a more helpful translation of poimena is “shepherd.” Pastor means shepherd.”

What does a shepherd do? Well, he shepherds sheep…

6. The single greatest YouTube video ever posted.

Look at his eyes after the slip. It could be used for one of those cartoons where the eyeballs pop out of the head. Classic.

7. Roger Olson on why inerrancy does not matter.

“[F]or most of us the word “inerrancy” has become too problematic uncritically to embrace and use. To the untrained and untutored ear “inerrant” always and necessarily implies absolute flawless perfection even with regard to numbers and chronologies and quotations from sources, etc. But even the strictest scholarly adherents of inerrancy kill that definition with the death of a thousand qualifications.”

Sam Storms, Tim Kimberly, and myself will be discussing this on a future broadcast of Theology Unplugged. Look for it.

8. Ummm…would this count as a positive mutation?

9. Clark Pinnock died this week.

A man riddled with controversy, but full of grace, Pinnock will be remembered for many things, both good and bad. From where I stand, though I profoundly disagreed with his conclusions about the nature of God, he did help me to solidify my understanding of the issue. For this, I am grateful.

If there is something you would like included on Theology Around the Web, let me know here.

  • Do not use the blog to promote yourself, as your surrogate blog, or as an advertisement. I am sure you are interesting and have some really nice things to say, but you can get your own blog.

  • Keep your comments short. Like when your comments are longer than the blog, that is too long.

Theological Word of the Day

Canon of Scripture
(Greek kanon, “rule” or “measuring rod”) In Christian theology, the term canon is used to describe the accepted books of the Old and New Testament. Protestants, Catholics, and Orthodox all have the same twenty-seven book New Testament canon, but will differ with regard to the Old Testament canon. Catholics universally accept what are called the [...] continue reading
