I've more often encountered people online in forums that were christians are were extremely rude and judgemental. I've also encountered many in person in the church. The anonymous nature of the internet tends to lend itself to people being more rude and blunt than in other way.
I think legalism tends to create judgmental and harshness in people. If your faith doesn't allow for grace then you would extend it to others

Michael,
Perhaps this is slightly off subject, but I have a question that might also be of interest to others who post here: Is there a way to follow a particular "poster" on P&P on any subject to which they post? I'll be specific (And I hope she reads this). There is someone who names herself as "Mbaker" (See your "Christian Hymn" blog posts). I would very much like to read her comments on other subjects, because...well, because she is brilliant. I suspect she's been published (if not, our loss). We share the same SBC background, but while I have "come out" to my church as a Calvinist, she, I think reluctantly, defends the Arminian perspective. Beyond her engaging comments she also seems to share my weird sense of humor. Bottom line: Is it possible to follow the comments of a particular poster on any subject to which they post? Thank you so much for all of your articles. You have brought more light and hope to my life than you will ever know.

This is one of the biggest let downs of the Pyro blog for me. For all their theological acuity, all 3 authors of the blog often engage in recreational sarcasm and PJ often cites some of the biblical examples you quoted above as justification.

‘Slice’ (now called Crosstalk Blog) is one of the worst examples in my opinion, and Challies is perhaps one of the best as he consistently maintains the standards of civility and irenic expression, to the point that some other bloggers called him ‘middle of the road, too nice’.

Here's another Mormon slipping to say thanks, Michael, for a wonderful, thought-provoking post! I can only add, what if God watched and listened to EVERYTHING we say and write and do? He does!! And how comforting to live so that we are okay with that, and know He will be able to tell by our loving words and acts we are truly "Christian"! Good reminders for us all. Thanks again.

Hope you don't mind if a Mormon slips in to say this is the best post I've read on the subject of civility and I've read lots. I think I need to tape it to my desk and read it before I start typing. Thanks!
