Great post, Michael! What others have said about the "charity police" may be an appropriate word of caution not to fall into the trap of the opposite extreme but I think it does not invalidate anything you have said.

I hope you don't mind that I quoted part of your post on my blog.

Don't forget the challenge-riposte paradigm of the ancient world where a challenge had to be met and overcome or the speaker would lose honour before his audience.

Gracious speech to gracious people.

Michail,
I see where you made the news. On christian news headlines
they have Parchment and Pen link that brings you here.

May you be a blessing to all that come and read.

Michael
Thanks for this reminder, the internet kinda reminds me of the judgement day, all of what we do is recorded for God to see, of course in Gods books if we repent that makes a difference.
It is hard to be graceful sometimes, although I know we should when talking to unbelivers on some web sights, many of the ahteistic evolutuionist will call the author of any resource that you submit "a liar" and I get really tired of hearing that , its almost becomming according to some of those people, that the Saints are the sinners and the sinners are the up holders of truth. and there are other things that make me start feeling verry ungraceful, sinners in our society shove premarital sex philosophies down our childrens throats then dont tell them why they get thr HPV virus and where it really comes from, they trash marraige then tell people "see, we told you it doesnt work." at what point do you "dust the soil off from your sandal?" and discern how long should we "content for the faith?" is it when you can feel its getting harder to walk in the Spirit while talking to these guys?

things to think about when talking with someone...

1:what is the frame of mind in the person you are talking to?
2:are they in doubt to the point they are losing faith?
3:is it a matter of life and death?

the internet is a way to hide who we are in some ways. we can pretend to be anything because for some it is a game and others it become the only reality they know.

We need to address error when it is presented. I have known people who went to church and their issues in church were not addressed and I had an aunt married to a man who took every opportunity he could to debate doctrine even to the point he was standing over my dad in his deathbed trying to debate with him.

But as iron sharpens iron, many times we learn when we bounce these debates off each other. But we should never use it as condemnation against another. But we must give an answer for the hope that lies in us.

If I felt someone was close to giving up, I would do what I could to speak Truth. It hurts me when I hear people denying what is right, knowing they don't know their error. This is a matter of life and death.

CMP, Thanks for this post. There is part of me that sometimes wants to scream "you idiot. Can't you see how clear this is..." and yet most of the time I have restrained myself from such behavior. You see, I come from a family of opinionated Baptist (Michael, you were right about Baptist) who think they are right about most everything. And yet, when I would be irenic in my approach when discussing theology with others who disagreed with me I would feel like I should be more forceful. Not until I heard you speak of the irenic approach , the scriptural support for it and exactly how it worked , did I feel comfortable with applying something I had wanted to put into practice long before I knew it had a name. Thanks CMP for helping me realize that this is indeed the best and scriptural way to "argue" with others in regard to theology.
