Help . . . My Back!
by C Michael PattonFebruary 4th, 2009
As many of you know, we had a lot of ice here in OKC last week. Everyone I know slipped and fell at least once. I slipped and fell three times!
Well, to make a long story short, my back began to progressively give me problems over the next few days. Sunday, I could not move. I literally had to crawl to the bathroom at the speed of a slow turtle. I have had a bad back for years so some of this was nothing new. Normally, I just wait a few days and it progressively gets better. This time it has progressively gotten worse. I finally bit the bullet and went to the emergency care at the local hospital (something I never do—I hate going to the doctor). After some x-rays, a shot of steroids, and a drug perscription, I went home.
Having been knocked out for the last 24 hours, I have been feeling better. I can walk again.
The doctor called and said that I have a fracture in my back. One of my vertibrea has freed itself and is progressively attacking my nerves causing the intense pain and near paralysis in my left leg.
It sounds worse than I think it is. The treatment right now is just to try to be careful so surgery does not become a necessity. Any way, if you have been wondering where I have been and why I have canceled class the last week, this is it.
I thank you all for your prayers. I have been overwhelmed with emails and Facebook responses that have made up for the comfort that I would normally get when I whined to mommy.
I should be back in full swing a few days. Until then I will use this time to reflect in constant prayer and Bible study. Until then I will whine to God and watch TV.

If I arrange for God to miraculously heal you will you become Charismatic?

Well, I would rather him heal my mother. Back problems are a little too subjective.

Michael,
I blew out my L5/S1 disc last summer and had to undergo emergency surgery to ensure that further nerve damage didn’t occur, so I fully empathize with you. Almost 9 months after the surgery, I still suffer some pain in my right leg as a result of the nerve damage caused by the biggest piece of disc lodging itself against my sciatic nerve, but the original back pain is completely gone. Don’t discount the benefits of surgery! (Of course, my surgery was necessary, whereas yours probably isn’t quite to that stage.)
Either way, do what’s best for you in the long run. Will pray for your condition.

Michael, sorry to hear of your misfortune. I know it seems “when it rains it poors”. Just know that there are many praying for your recovery and God”s grace in the mean time. Just do what the Dr says. We usually regret it when we don’t.

Michael, do not be discouraged God can and still does miracles. Ask me how I know that and I can talk your ear off. You see I am confined to a wheelchair due to total lower paralization from the waist down, God chose to still keep my bones intact when the Dr.s, said that they needed to come off from the hips down. He delivered me from drugs and now uses me to bring others to know him on a personal basis. You just keep the faith and keep praying for his will to be done in your Mothers and Your life daily, and keep stepping out in Faith One Moment at a time.
