A Little Time off and My Coming Appearance on Dr. Phil
Ok, I am not going to be on Dr. Phil, but I probably need to be. I am taking some time off from work (sort of) and thought that I would go through my . . . ahem . . . my four year old son Will’s superhero figures.
Yes, we all have our little vices that border on compulsive sinful habits. Mine, besides my obsession with U2, is superheros. Specifically the Justice League. I love heroes. Of course, I follow the party line and elect Superman as my favorite, but Batman comes a close second, along with Vigilante, and The Question (both DC Comics heroes). I like Marvel as well, but they just don’t have the grandeur of DC . . . sorry, but it is true.
Here is a representative collection of pictures that demonstrate why I should be on Dr. Phil. Time would escape us if I were to show you my super hero movie collection. Ironically, I don’t have any many comic books.
You can click on each for the larger version to check them out!
After you have checked them out, I ask you . . . What compulsive, odd obsession do you have?
This is my DC collection of Justice League from the cartoon. There are two watch towers on the table. To the left are the superheros. To the right are the villains. Back left: superheros on motorcycles.
Top: My Justice League collection of 10″ figures as well as a few 2″. (Those on the table are 4″)
Here is a close of of some of the heroes. Vigilante is the one with the cowboy hat in the blue.
Here are the villains. Gorilla Grodd, Doomsday, Copperhead, Joker, Solomon Grundy (whom I dressed up as for Will’s birthday last year—scare the jeepers out of Gavin my nephew), some of the Justice Lords, and Bazzaro, just to name a few.
Close up of the larger figures. Far right is the Justice Lord Superman (this is an evil Superman from an alternate dimension—kind of a middle knowledge, possible world Superman, for those of you who want to keep this theological!)
Toward the back is my collection of Batplanes and Batmobiles. You can see the “Tumbler” from Batman Returns in the back. The 6″ figures on the ground are awesome. You can see Superdog and friends on the top right. Finally, there is a really fun game that I play with the kids where you guess which Justice League figure the other has chosen.
Finally, I tried to get most of my Marvel figures some representation. My favorite is the Silver Surfer on the far right.
So, what is your fancy? Why might you appear on Dr. Phil?

Books, books, & more books. I tend to be a bit obsessive about books. If money was no object, I’d keep Amazon in business.

“My favorite is the Silver Surfer on the far right.”
It actually looks like the Silver Surfer is on the far left.
And it’s a very nice collection of superheroes. Enjoy your time off with the family.

“You can click on each for the larger version to check them out!”
“After you have checked them out, I ask you . . . What compulsive, odd obsession do you have?”
I didn’t click for the larger version , so I don’t have to answer the question.
But I may call Dr. Phil…although I’ve heard he is not a real doctor… but does your obsession really deal with reality? A Dr. who is not a real Dr. may work for you.
He is a Super hero Dr. …just right

Michael, I just called my sons, McKrey 11 and Samuel 6 into the room to see your collection.
“WOW! He has everything!”
“We have this one, and this one….!”
They had fun clicking on everything. You don’t have some of the large die-cast Batman cars they have though (not to make you jealous or anything).
I collect little hand-carved wooden animals and children. Most are from Germany, but I have some from Kenya, Poland, Norway and Russia. I have them lined up along a little ledge which runs around our breakfast nook. Love um’!

I am a recovering shopaholic. It has been 12 days since my last clothes purchase. Oh all right, so I’m not actually recovering but it does seem to be a bit of obsession with me.
Although, being a broke seminary student in a few months I’m sure will curtail that
My other guilty pleasure…Project Runway. Love It! Season 4 just ended so what to do until the next season. Shop? Hmmm…..

Well, I did not take pictures of the three drawers that I did not display. As well, I have about four boxes of stuff (unopened) in the garage.
But, I have to admit, I don’t have the die-cast

Good job on the Marvel poster. However, I did notice that the majority of the figures are DC. You ARE teaching him that Marvel rules, right?

I have two obsessions
Like Shaun…it has got to be books and more books!!
On my 40th Birthday my wife, daughter, Mum and Dad spent the day in Hay On Wye, Herefordshire,UK the literary capital of the UK…it is a small market town which has more than 30 bookshops! What bliss!! On arrival I thought I had stepped straight into heaven!
I cannot throw away a book…ever…it is on a par with heresy! I cannot even return a book I have loaned graciously! (I need some irenic training in this area of my life)
I almost had a heated debate with my wife last night when, without even having engaging in a process of consutation, she declared that she had had a clearout of our bedroom and promptly gave one of “my” books to my Dad! I was horrorstruck. It turned however that the book in question was an autobiography of a sporting figure which I had loaned from my dad about a year ago, had instantly read, but had conveniently forgotten to return! I still think there should have been a consultation proces beforehand…I might have been on the verge of reading it again!
The second obsession I have is with new places. I am at my happiest when I am exploring somewhere new geographically…even the journey to get there is filled with anticipation! The problem is, especially if it is a historic city such as York or Edinburgh, (I’m afraid you Americans will have to use your imagination here…not having much of an ancient history and all that!!!…sorry I couldn’t resist it!) full of winding alleyways and narrow cobbled sidestreets, I just have to explore each and every one…it drives Anne mad!
Dr Phil (whoever he may be) would have plenty of material to go on I can assure you! By the way Michael, I actually think the ulterior motive behind your having kids was really to view it as a brilliant opportunity to build up your superhero collection!
Also, you did make my heart skip a beat when I read the following comment.
“There are two watch towers on the table.”
Just for one moment I thought you were the first of a new breed - a semi-emerging Calvinist Dispensationalist Jehovah’s Witness!
Eric S. Mueller on 16 Apr 2008 at 7:09 am #
I agree with Shaun: one of my primary obsessions is books. I often acquire more books than I can read, either through Amazon gift certificates or yard sales. I intend to read them, but work and small children and a huge stack of magazines I need to get through keep getting in the way.
I’m also obsessed with computers and gadgets. If money (and space) were no object, I would probably have at least one of everything: smart phones, laptops, MP3 players, etc.
Kara P. on 16 Apr 2008 at 8:19 am #
Mine is the computer (blogs, MySpace, email, looking at photography websites, searching random facts and quotes)!
However, I border on having OCD!

Since discovering your TTP several years ago, I have been on a course of discerning what is my theology and what is my faith. Maybe better said another way, What happend to the magical God book I grew up with, only to discover another world of a theoligical twist, that asks the most important questions of life. In short, on a discovery of life tour, the bigger question, yea?
I thought you did not have the Hulk, but I noticed him behind Capt. America’s shield. He has always been a favorite of mine among the others. The strength thing alures me to fantasy. The thing is I don’t think I could control all that power, surly I would do good, but what is good and what is bad in a rage. That is why they are super heroes and we are mere mortals,

“Holy Forgotten Has been” Theology Man!
I don’t see the classic batmobile from the campy Batman series.
I don’t know if you know it or knot there is a car guy around the Metroplex that built one and durring summer time can be seen driving it around town as well as to special events.

Hi, I don’t think we have been introduced! Good to speak to you.
I was once dragged kicking and screaming by my wife (it was her birthday so there was little in the way of negotiating influence that I could exert) to watch Bruce Almighty (starring Jim Carrey…who I have a keen aversion to).
I also was still trying to get back into her good books after taking her to see the film American Beauty on Valentine’s night. It was a fairly last minute decision and she left all the arrangements to me thinking that I was bound to select a romantic comedy! It is pretty dark at the best of times…I loved it…Anne was none too amused!! Hence you can see my total lack of objection when “Bruce Almighty” was thrown into the ring as a possible film we might go and say, despite the sinking feeling in the pit of my stomach at the prospect of having to endure two hours of Jim Carrie inanity!
Suffice it to say that I was gobsmacked (a Liverpool expression for amazed/astonished) to discover myself having a totally unexpected theological debate with myself, in a cinema, about how difficult it must be to be God! How careful you have got to be with all this omnipotent might stuff..and what the dire implications might be if my will were to be done instead of His!

Wow very nice collection!
Between me and my son and we have a very good toy collection as well. But your JLA collection is exceptional.
Maybe I’ll photograph mine and my sons collection as it would make for a more interesting one. We have a decent Batman collection, but unlike your heretical position Mike, we own some very nice batman comics (a few superman, Hawkman, Green Lantern, Spiderman, X-men).
I own the first editions of the 50 anniversary of “The Dark Knight Returns”, I also own these series “Legends of the Dark Knight”, “All-Star Batman & Robin” (new), “Batman Year One”, “Batman: The Cult “, “The Killing Joke”, “A Death in the Family”, there are others but I can’t remember them, they are all put away.

Glad to make your acquaintance also!
I am now feeling just a touch isolated.
Not only am I thousands miles away from you on the other side of a huge pond, but I appear to be the only guy in all of christendom, or post-christendom even, who has never built up a collection of superheroes. What on earth was I doing with my misspent childhood!
I think we should forget about all this theology stuff. If we stick to the superhero collection the numbers hitting the site will go through the roof!
We could almost have a swap section on e-bay for those who have spotted a superhero who they are illicitly coveting!

Can you see it around the Patton household?
“He won’t share let me play with his Superman!”
“MICHAEL! How many time do I have to tell you to share with the kids!”

I used to collect Japanese robots, that is before they became so commonplace in the U.S. Just trying to capture some of the simple wonder and joy I had as a child.

Michael…I think we must be kindred spirits….The one thing I usually have a problem with as far as peopel from seminary is that they can come accross as stuffy and only into one thing. The fact that you are a huge U2 fan and also a superhero fanatic makes you that much more normal and down to earth. As much as I love R.C. Sproul for some reason I don’t think I could chat with him about the latest U2 album.

For a number of years I was collecting certain types of dolls. I won’t get into the details as I don’t think most of you would be so interested. I kind of lost interest, but I still am the “owner” of a Yahoo group with over 900 members. Luckily, it’s a pretty quiet group as I wouldn’t be able to handle it otherwise.
I’m also kind of compelled to read the newspapers. Even if I go on a week vacation, I will read through all the newspapers that are piled up. I don’t want to miss anything! Plus, there is a practical reason too, I would say. I am a juvenile probation officer and I really should know if one of my young clients died. I would be committing a serious faux pas if I sent a letter to a client saying something like, “You have not been reporting to me. I also see you still owe restitution. Please call.” Someone may call me saying, “Hey, the kid is dead. Cut him some slack.” Oops, so sorry.
Like many of you, I have MANY, MANY books. I have had to resort to storing some of them in the garage in metal shelves there. It doesn’t help that I decided to display some of my dolls in one of the bookcases. I figured if I collected them all that time, I may as well see some of them. Most of the dolls are put away and I sold quite a few. But, if I can do the code correctly here, I will show you a few photos. The first one is some of the dolls in the bookcase. The second one is my favorite doll that was made for me based on a 1950 carnival doll. Her eyes move side to side and to me, she is so cute. The next is another funny-faced doll. She is Heloise, based on the character in the children’s books by the same name.
I also do a lot of gardening. More perennial flowers than anything, but some vegetables, annuals, and houseplants.
(Michael, I hope people don’t get multiple emails as I edit posts, because I do that quite often and may have to now as I try these photos.)
Well, I see the code got stripped off, so if anyone is actually interested, you can click on these links to see the dolls:

Even if you are a DC fan you are really a Marvel fan too because of the way DC rips off Marvel characters!
Incredible Hulk - Solomon Grundy
Mr. Fantastic - Plastic Man
Banshee - Black Canary
Ant Man/Yellow Jacket - Captain Atom
Human Torch - Fire
Iron Man - Steel/Man of Steel
C’mon, DC…leave our guys alone!

Phil, I see that you are up to you usual social activities! If you keep at it you will receive a response from everyone. I think that it is actually FRIENDS that you are collecting!

Hi Susan
I know..I’m just a lonely, sad British man really who is just in need of a bit of
friendship, love and attention!
I can’t wait for the day when someone suggests we all meet up somewhere!
However I am feeling a little bit less isolated now that I have made contact with Ben, a fellow P&P blogger who resides in the North East of England!…and a really decent bloke he is too!!

When I see this the only thing I can think of is something another Hoosier once said.
When I was a young boy,
Said put away those young boy ways
Now that I’m gettin’ older, so much older
I love all those young boy days.
