A Press Release to Evangelicalism
September 27, 2007
Frisco, Texas: When I started The Theology Program in 2001, I had no idea what God was going to do. We now have over 50,000 registered online and on-campus students in 110 countries. We are in hundreds of churches and soon to begin in hundreds more.
When The Theology Program grew into Reclaiming the Mind Ministries in 2006, I had no idea that the response would be so great. Our website receives over 100,000 hits daily. We are now looking to expand our ministry in ways in which we never dreamed. It blows my mind how many have endorsed and committed themselves to this ministry.
When the Parchment and Pen blog began over six months ago, (most of all) I had no idea that I would be writing so often!
I really had no idea what an impact a simple blog could make.
In all the ministries of RMM, I have never sought to confirm prejudices, but to engage the issues as honestly as I could. This takes risk and trust.
The risk involved comes from a personal desire to see people more committed to a persuasion about the essentials of the Christian faith. While it is tempting to skew the evidence, make overstatements, and create straw-men, we have worked under the assumption that we must have a faith that is intellectually honest in all areas. In this, there is the real risk that people may not look like us in the end. They may find alternative positions more persuasive.
The trust must follow the risk. I think that God is a pretty big God. I trust that He is not alarmed with our questions or doubts. In fact, I think he is pleased with them. For in them we show an honest struggle for truth. If we follow the God of all eternity, then we have no need to stick our head in the sand on any issue. We can trust Him to guide us to the truth.
I am glad to say that, from everything I have seen, the risk has done nothing but disarm people and persuade them further in the truths of Christianity. They are disarmed because they cannot approach us with the suspicion so common in our postmodern world.
My greatest desire is for people to know that Christianity is true, not just a blind hope. So many people approach their faith with the hope that in the end the roll of the dice will have been favorable to them. Other faiths have only this choice available to them, but not Christianity. I desire for people’s faith to be real, defensible, and able to stand through the trials that so often turn people away from the faith or into a state of perpetual disillusionment. The seed must go deep. Theological discipleship must happen if the root is to be established.
This is not meant to be a ministry promotion or a plea for ministry funds (although funds are always needed!). It is simply meant to share encouragement with those of you out there who have, like myself, been lamenting the deteriorating condition of the mind within the Evangelical Church. Things really are changing. People are not as ready to turn away from truth as we often think. We just have to provide the avenue and the methodology that regains their trust.
I want to say thank you to all who are involved in and supporting this ministry in so many ways. It encourages me (and all the RMM staff), confirming that we are following God’s direction.
Folks, I think Aslan really is on the move.
Our ministry is a partner based ministry. This means that the majority of our support comes from people like you. Please consider supporting Reclaiming the Mind Ministries as we make theology accessible. Donate today.

Michael,
My hat goes off to you and everyone involved in RMM for all that you do and
believe. It is obvious that the Lord has blessed this ministry in every way.
It became apparent to me after only a short while (over a year and a half
ago) that what RMM does is bring the mind back to Christianity and allows
me not to have to take that leap of faith without understanding when and
where that leap is necessary. It allows me to think through issues (with
your great guidance) and it has always brought me closer to Christ.
From the simplest of things to the most complex matters, we have been
able to learn irenically and come to conclusions on our own
(which I must admit are usually the same as yours).
I hope that RMM remains strong and that the Lord continues to bless and
watch over this ministry and all who are involved!
God Bless
Cheryl

Michael,
As you probably have gathered by now, my questioning process began before I even heard of RMM or the Theology Program. I went through a significant paradigm shift due to stepping back and out of experiences, traditions, indoctrination and emotions and ask “what does the bible really say”. What your ministry has done, both through the TTP courses that I’ve taken and through this blog, is taken that thought process to a whole new level. It is helping that embreyo grow and develop. It’s a beautiful and fruitful process and my only hope is that more christians avail themselves of it.
But to be honest, I have most impressed by the risk you have taken of putting your self out there personally. We all wear masks and can hide behind our christianity, our theology, or bible knowledge. But it takes a lot of courage to say “hey, this is me and this is where I am with this”. It has encouraged me more than you know.
So keep on keeping on. Stay tuned and humbled. There’s no telling where God will take this thing.
“Now unto Him who is able to do far more abundantly beyond all that we ask or think, according to the power that works within us” Eph 3:20

Michael,
I thank God for leading me to your wonderful ministry. You and everyone involved with RMM do a superb job. Mathew stated to “Love the Lord with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind”. Sadly, the mind component is sorely lacking in many Christian ministries. Thank you for “Reclaiming the Mind” (pun intended). I pray that RMM continues to grow!
P.S. Lisa - I agree with your entire second paragraph!

CMP,
I have no idea who you are. I just chanced upon your blog. But now it’s on my list of blogs to periodically scan.
Thanks so much for all that you do. I really appreciate and respect your ministry.

Michael,
I really appreciate your intellectual honesty and willingness to go against
the grain when necessary and to listen to others rather than label them and
dismiss them. It’s rare to find someone so insightful and fair so please keep
it up.

You ask the tough questions (you and your guest bloggers) and then engage with the issue intellectual honesty.
It is important that people see this can be done without endangering the faith, without worrying about “slippery slopes” and without fear.
I have found that the stronger your core faith is, the more willing you are to engage in the discussions in that way.
If you are standing on the top of a slope, which is very safe and comfortable, but may not be complete Truth, I would say that IS better than sliding all the way down the slope into outright error. BUT, if you are convinced that the Truth must be somewhere along that slope, you should not just sit comfortably on top, with only a semblance of truth, and possibly only a half-truth. You should get a stout rope, sturdy shoes and head down carefully, but boldly in search of the whole Truth!

Michael,
Thank you for your voice in the world of Christianity!!!
I have listened to Theology unplugged for a while, and just recently picked up on the blog. There are so many forces dividing Christians into dogmatic holy huddles of “like minded” believers. Reclaiming the mind ministries has been so inspiring to me, encouraging me not to be afraid of different points of view, always pushing towards a biblical view of balance. Thank you for your integrity in biblical matters!

I wish Pastors would present this level of meat on Sunday
morning. I find more spiritual nourishment from this blog
than church. I have to admit that I’m more of an academic.
My heart’s desire is to find a church where the Sunday morning
message is Textual Criticism 101 and not Six Keys to be more happy or Six steps to be more nice. I’ve just noticed that
Pastors continue to keep their members at this baby level
of Christianity. I hunger for a church where the Pastor presents
messages that are akin to those found on this blog. I could
spend days on this blog and monergism.com. If you guys
know of church that presents this level of meat then please
let me know about it because I want to attend.

David,
I doubt you would ever find a church that teaches at this level on a Sunday. There are however, pastors that do consider christian education serious business and will offer classes/programs outside of Sunday to give their congregants a richer study. I would start with looking for a church that hosts the TTP courses or what I did when I needed to find a new place of fellowship last year, I went to the church locator at the DTS website (and we have a bible institute w/TTP courses). DTS grads tend to take the bible thing a little serious
