Emerging Commercials-A Must See

This is too great. Watch them both. There are two more at www.godtube.com. It is funny how short humourous creative commercials can say so much. I just wish that they would air these on FOX during 24 and American Idol.
Want to know what the emerging church thinks of “Christians,” this is it.
Notice at the end the picture reads “Christian no more.” Very emerging. The idea is that even the label ”Christian” is tainted. The foil represents a combination of an overly aggressive and enthusiastic evangelical and a judgmental fundamentalist. The hero is simply a “Christ follower.”
They also reference U2 in the second one!

Those are great commercials, they really follow the PC/Mac commercials well. It

Well, I guess I see what the emerging chruch is saying. But as far as I’m concerned, “Christian” and “Christ-follower” are saying the same thing.
The dorky guy playing the Christian is obviously not how I want to be portrayed. But I have no problem calling myself a “Christian” or “Christ-follower”.
I could go on about this, but for the sake of brevity I will hold.

I agree Nathan. It is really silly to me to call the “bad” guy simply “Christian.” Maybe fundie or even evangelical, but to take a somewhat neutral term such as “Christian” and make it bad is not really hitting the spot if you know what I mean. Still, they were really funny.
BTW: I am getting it for the commercial insinuating that U2 is not Christian. Sigh…

This commercial does something that is extremely common among christian (or Christian-follower, makes no difference here): Rip of a secular idea and modify it for christian consumption. No originality whatever.

I am not an Emergent nor am I emerging. I am an emerging (adjective form) Christian. In fact I am very new to Christianity and the first thing I ran across after my rebirth was a place called Bible.Org where they had a series of instruction called The Theology Program. I have been taking the courses as time permits and have made it through the Trinity. SO, as you can see I have extremely limited knowledge.
The other thing that needs saying is that I am and have been a political activists most of my life, certainly much longer than I have been a Christian. My nom de Plume on the net was John Galt and that should give you a clue to where I was politically and spiritually.
To the point or more appropriate a question. Why, Michael, would you want these videos aired and why specifically on Fox

I thought that they represented well the common perception about evangelical/fundamentalist Christians from the standpoint of those outside the camp. If they were aired (not sure how serious I was about that) but they would have to be seen as coming from Christians. That way others would recognize that we see these same type of problems (know-it-all, do-it-my-way) in the church and that the church is not really this way in essence. Hope this makes sense.
BTW: I would not say that emergers are anti- Christian by any means. That is a very strong statement. For one, emergers are not unified. For another, you would have to identify the aspect of their practice or beliefs that is anti-Christian before you label them as such. I would take a more irenic tone about this if I were you. If there is one thing that is certain in a postmodern world, polemics does not get you very far.
Also, didn’t you know that The Theology Program moved to http://www.reclaimingthemind.org. It is no longer officially represented at bible.org.
