I know I'm a bit late in this commentary but I'm glad you brought it up.
Although we are to reject the world and will be persecuted, I agree that our very purpose of creation was to be in a loving relationship with God. I don't think that he intended us to curl up into a ball and cry over our sinfulness, as that wouldn't help our zeal for him at all. Rather, the closer I get to him the happier I am because I recognize him in more places. It's like seeing your friend immediately when you're feeling down. He's there all the time and is really the only one we can depend on.
Being in Christ is ultimate joyfulness and comfort, and one of the only things to be happy about in this world. After all, only he is good.
"I love the Lord, for he heard my voice;
he heard my cry for mercy.
Because he turned his ear to me,
I will call on him as long as I live." Ps 116:1-2.

Praise to the Lord!

Yeah, I haven't been to happy about joy in a long time ;)

I do think that joy and happiness overlap, else they are really the same thing. My tradition always taught me that happiness is bad and joy is good. But when I really think about what you said, I think being happy and being joyful are really saying the same thing.
When I'm joyful about being in christ, I am really just as happy also.

Where did this all start?
